Session 23

For today's class, read acts 3-5 of Hamlet. This will complete the play.

After completing the reading, I recommend watching a film version of the play. There are many to choose from.

  • The 1948 version starring Laurence Olivier is famous and traditional, but, well, really old.
  • The 1990 version starring Mel Gibson is good, but abridged.
  • The 1996 version starring Kenneth Branagh is excellent and unabridged, but includes gratuitous nudity. The setting is changed, but it's the same otherwise.
  • The 2000 version starring Ethan Hawke modernizes the setting, which can be weird.

Session 25

For today's class, read acts 4-5 of Macbeth. This will complete the play.

After completing the reading, I recommend watching a film version of the play. Like Hamlet, there are several to choose from.

  • The 1948 version, directed by and starring Orson Welles. It's good, but really old.
  • The 1971 version, directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jon Finch. I don't recommend this one. It's weird, dark, violent, and has some nudity.
  • The 2006 version, directed by Geoffrey Wright and starring Sam Worthington. It mostly keeps the language, but is set in modern Australia among gangsters.
  • The 2015 version, directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender is great, but includes some graphic violence and plays a bit with the script.
